Beginners Course
Is this really for me?
Yes, and here is why.
The Beginners Course at The Academy was designed for one person: someone who has never grabbed anyone on a mat before, isn't sure what to expect, and wants to understand what they're getting into before they commit.
That person is exactly who this is for.
About the beginners course
The first session
You walk in. Johan introduces himself. He says: my goal is to make jiujitsu easily accessible to all of you — even if you've never grabbed someone.
Then you play a game. You try to touch your partner's shoulders and the back of their knees. They try to do the same to you. No technique. No instruction. No correct answer. Just movement, attention, and the beginning of something.
By the time you realise you're doing jiujitsu, you're already doing it.
That's how every session starts. Not with a demonstration. Not with a sequence to memorise. With a problem to solve — at exactly the right scale for where you are.

What the course is
Six weeks. One cohort. Maximum ten people.
Each session builds on the last — not by adding more techniques, but by expanding the problem. Week by week, the situations become more familiar. The connections become more intentional. The game starts to make sense — not just physically, but logically.
By Week 6, you won't just know some jiujitsu. You'll understand why it works.

What you'll cover
The course is structured around the 5 Situations framework — but it doesn't follow a rigid week-by-week script.
The first half of the course is about playing the whole game. All five situations, experienced as a connected flow. No isolation, no components pulled apart before you've felt how they connect. Just the game — at the right scale, with the right constraints, under Johan's guidance.
The second half narrows. Based on what's actually happening in the room — the situations you're finding difficult, the problems that keep recurring — the focus shifts to specific situations and the constraints that develop them.
Every cohort is different. The framework stays the same. The course responds to the people in it.
